Quick Insights on Male Fertility

Understanding where to begin and what to expect.

What causes male infertility?

Various factors may influence fertility, including low sperm count, poor motility, blockages, hormone imbalances, varicocele, genetic issues, or lifestyle habits.

How common is it?

Male factor infertility contributes to nearly half of all infertility cases. It’s more widespread than most realize — but it’s also highly treatable with the right care.

Where should I start?

A semen analysis is usually the first diagnostic step. It provides detailed insights into sperm count, shape and movement — key markers of reproductive health.

Is male infertility treatable?

Yes! Depending on the cause, treatment may involve lifestyle changes, hormone therapy, surgery, or advanced fertility techniques like IUI or IVF with ICSI.

When should I see a doctor?

Suppose you’ve been trying to conceive for 6–12 months without success, or have a known medical issue or prior surgery. In that case, it’s time to consult a fertility specialist.

Understanding Male Fertility

For conception to occur, three key functions must work together — sperm production, sperm quality, and sperm transport.

Let’s break it down:

1. Sperm Production

Sperm develop in the testes under the influence of hormones such as testosterone, FSH and LH. Disruptions from injuries, infections or hormonal imbalances can impact production.

2. Sperm Quality

Sperm are evaluated for count, motility and morphology. When one or more of these parameters are low, fertilization becomes more challenging.

3. Sperm Transport

Healthy sperm must travel efficiently through the reproductive tract. Blockages or prior procedures can interfere with this process, but techniques like sperm retrieval for IVF/ICSI can offer solutions.

Common Causes of Male Infertility

Lifestyle & Environmental Factors

Smoking, alcohol, drug use, stress or exposure to toxins can lower sperm health. Making sustainable lifestyle improvements can boost fertility over time.

Genetic Conditions

Issues like Klinefelter syndrome or Y-chromosome microdeletions can influence hormone levels and sperm production. Genetic testing helps identify these and guide treatment.

Structural Challenges

Some men produce sperm normally but experience blockages that prevent sperm from being ejaculated. Procedures like MESA or TESE can retrieve sperm for use in IVF.

Hormone Imbalances

Low testosterone or imbalanced FSH/LH levels may reduce sperm production. Hormonal therapy can often restore balance and improve fertility outcomes.

Infections & Inflammation

Conditions affecting the testes or prostate can impair sperm development. Treating the infection and allowing recovery time can help restore normal function.

Varicocele

Enlarged veins in the scrotum increase heat and impact sperm quality. Surgical repair can often improve sperm count and motility.

Why Fertility Testing Matters

Early evaluation helps determine if the issue is mild, moderate, or severe — allowing your care team to recommend the most effective plan.

This insight also helps align your partner’s treatment plan for better success.

Types of Male Fertility Tests

1
Semen Analysis

Measures sperm count, motility, morphology, and overall quality.

2
Hormone Tests

Checks levels of testosterone, FSH, and LH to identify hormonal causes.

3
Physical Examination

Detects varicocele, swelling, or other structural issues.

4
Genetic Testing

Helps identify inherited factors affecting fertility.

Test Overview

Semen Analysis

A semen analysis is a simple, confidential diagnostic test that offers valuable insights into male fertility health. It evaluates the number, movement, and shape of sperm — key factors that influence conception success.

Here’s what to expect at ConceptionIVF during your semen analysis process:

Schedule

Contact our fertility team at (212) 661-7673 or submit an online consultation request to schedule your initial semen analysis appointment. Our coordinators will guide you through the booking and preparation steps.

Prepare

For best results, follow your specialist’s pre-test instructions carefully. You may be advised to abstain from ejaculation for 1–3 days before the test. Following these directions ensures the most accurate results.

Complete

On the day of your test, please bring a valid photo ID and check in at our reception. A member of our Andrology Lab team will accompany you to a private collection room, where you’ll provide your sample in a comfortable, discreet environment.

What Happens During a Semen Analysis

A Step-by-Step Breakdown

When you arrive for your semen analysis at ConceptionIVF, our friendly front-desk staff will assist you with check-in. You’ll then be guided by an Andrology Lab specialist to a private collection room.

Your sample is typically collected via masturbation and placed in a sterile container provided by the lab. (Partners may accompany you if you wish, though oral sex is not permitted, as saliva can affect the sample’s quality.)

Once collected, the sample is carefully labeled and transferred to our on-site Andrology Laboratory for immediate examination. Specialists will assess:

And calculate Total Motile Sperm (TMS) for a comprehensive fertility profile.

Suppose your initial results appear borderline or inconsistent. In that case, your doctor may recommend a repeat test, as sperm counts and motility can vary naturally.

For patients who prefer home collection or require religious accommodations, ConceptionIVF offers discreet home kits. Simply return your sample within 45 minutes, maintaining it near body temperature. Our team provides step-by-step guidance before the test.

What Your Test Results Show

Understanding Your Report

A semen analysis evaluates how many sperm are present, how well they move, and their shape — all crucial to successful fertilization.

Here’s what the report typically measures:

Count (Concentration)

Indicates how many sperm are present per milliliter of semen.

If your sperm count is significantly reduced, your doctor might recommend hormonal evaluation or genetic testing to determine possible causes.

Volume

Represents the total amount of semen produced.

When both volume and concentration are low, hormone levels or potential blockages may be evaluated further.
Motility

Shows how efficiently sperm move forward — a vital factor in reaching and fertilizing the egg.

Ideally, 40% or more of sperm should show active movement.

A slightly reduced motility rate doesn’t always mean infertility, but may warrant additional lifestyle or medical support.

Morphology

Refers to the shape and structure of sperm.

Normal morphology means at least 4% or more of sperm have a healthy shape.

Our specialists assess the head (genetic material), midpiece (energy), and tail (movement).

Abnormal morphology may make it harder for sperm to swim or attach to an egg. Still, targeted treatments can often help improve outcomes.

When to Expect Your Results

Average Turnaround Time

Semen analysis results are typically available within 5–7 business days.

If an outside physician referred your test, results will be shared directly with that provider for review.

If you haven’t received your report after a week, please reach out to info@conceptionIVF.com or contact your referring doctor.

If Your Results Are Abnormal

Reassurance & Next Steps

An abnormal semen analysis doesn’t automatically mean infertility. Sperm levels can fluctuate due to stress, illness, medications, or lifestyle factors.

Your ConceptionIVF fertility specialist may suggest:

Since sperm development takes around 2–3 months, improvements are often seen with proper guidance and care.

Treatment Options for Male Infertility

Lifestyle & Nutritional Changes

Small, consistent improvements in diet, movement and stress management can make a noticeable difference within a few months.

Medications & Hormone Therapy

Targeted medicines can restore hormonal balance and enhance sperm production.

Surgical Treatments

Procedures like varicocele repair or sperm retrieval can open new pathways to conception.

IUI & IVF Options

Advanced reproductive techniques like IUI or IVF with ICSI can help achieve pregnancy when sperm count or motility is low.

A semen analysis is usually the first test. It measures sperm count, motility, and shape to give a clear picture of reproductive health.

The collection process takes just a few minutes, and most patients receive their results within 5–7 business days.

Yes. Smoking, alcohol, poor diet, stress and lack of sleep can all impact sperm count and motility. Small lifestyle changes can make a big difference.

An abnormal result doesn’t mean infertility. Sperm levels naturally fluctuate. Your doctor may recommend a repeat test, lifestyle adjustments, or medical treatment.

Suppose your first test shows borderline or low results. In that case, your fertility specialist may ask you to repeat it after 6–8 weeks for a more accurate assessment.

In most cases, yes. Depending on the cause, treatment may include hormone therapy, surgery, or advanced reproductive methods like IUI or IVF with ICSI.

Absolutely. Temporary stress, fever, or certain medications can lower sperm production. Most men see improvement once health and balance are restored.

Yes. You may be asked to abstain from ejaculation for 1–3 days and avoid alcohol or caffeine for the most accurate results.

A healthy sperm concentration is typically 15 million or more sperm per milliliter. Even with lower counts, many men can still conceive successfully with the right support.

Suppose you’ve been trying to conceive for over 6–12 months without success, or have known medical issues. In that case, it’s best to schedule a consultation with a fertility expert.
